Positive Behaviour Support
What is
Behaviour Support?
Positive
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is described as an approach that seeks to address underlying causes of challenging behaviour with a focus on improving a person's quality of life.
This occurs through incorporating knowledge and principles of behaviour analysis with an emphasis on values-driven, culturally responsive, and person-centred practices.
PBS aims to understand and address causal factors of challenging behaviours within the environment and larger systems, rather than prioritising behaviour change only at the level of the individual.
Our
Approach
Offering personalised support built on care, trust, and authentic connection using an evidence based, humans rights, and system change approach.
Human-Rights:
Rights-based practice, recognising that quality-of-life improvements are fundamental to PBS and that upholding a person's human rights is both an ethical and a legal requirement. This framework equips practitioners to understand and articulate the nuances of person-centered practice in the context of a rights-based approach.
Evidence-Based:
Evidence-informed practice, drawing from behavioural and biomedical science. It also provides a framework for collecting and analysing primary evidence about a person, their preferences, and their goals to inform person-centered, data-driven decision making.
Systems-Change:
Systems improvements, recognising a person's right to access, equity, and inclusion, and the supports needed to achieve a fulfilling life.
The framework acknowledges that challenges faced by people with disabilities often stem from systems barriers rather than personal deficits.
Addressing these barriers is key to creative capable environments that support the person.
Solutions must tackle system-level issues, as these barriers are often the root cause of challenging behaviours.

Guiding Principles ensure a holistic approach to positive behaviour support, prioritising the rights and dignity of individuals while integrating evidence-informed strategies for effective practice. These principles create a framework that promotes equity, collaboration, and continuous improvement in service delivery.

Person-Centered Support
In consideration to each of these areas, for person-centered service to be applied, the framework incorporates evidence based approaches, strategies, and therapies that best fit the person's individual circumstances.
Whilst ensuring the individual's rights to make decisions about their own life are kept, and that the support received is tailored to their values and preferences throughout the process of service.

Empowering individuals with disability is so ingrained with who I am as a person, that I feel blessed to spend my days supporting them to use their voices, become empowered in their choices and live their lives the way that they want to.
